You know of mopeds, as in motor/pedal, small, motor equipped 2 wheelers that have pedals you can sort of use, to get it started mostly, but something that barely qualifies as a human powered vehicle. They have their place, are used in many countries in the world and were produced in fairly large numbers. But they are heavy, cumbersome, and don't function at all well as a bicycle if the motor isn't running.
So what is a Pedmo? That's a term coined in a conversation with my son discussing power assisted bicycles. Acknowledging the fact that typical mopeds were cumbersome to pedal, he said...."so these bikes you make should really be called Pedmos then, pedal before motor, you should copyright that". And so it was and is and done to suggest something different from a moped, a 2 wheeler that pedals well, AKA a bicycle that has a small helper motor that offers ancillary assist to the rider but doesn't inhibit the functionality of the original bike.
Both mopeds and Pedmos could be defined as alt trans, but quality built Pedmos are lighter, more agile, offer better fuel efficiency and ideally will serve double duty as a motor assisted vehicle OR a well functioning pedal bicycle. If your motor assist quits out on a ride, you can just pedal home. Try doing that with a moped.

When this blog talks about power assist for bicycles, it is within their legally defined limits and of course encourages readers to check local and state laws first before purchase or use.
